Introduction to median and average:
The median of a list of number can be arranging all the values from lowest value to highest value and select the middle one. There is a list of even numbers the middle value is not middle value, the mean of the two middle values is called median. The average is calculated by arranging the values from the set in a particular way and computing a single number as being the average of the set.
Median and Average-median
The given data are arranged in ascending or descending order, find a value centrally positioned in the arranged order. This central value or the middle value is called the median of the data.
For example, data are 15, 27, 20, 29, 17, 25, 26, 16, and 37. Arranging them in the ascending order, we get 15, 16, 17, 20, 25, 26, 27, 29, 37. The given raw data 25 is centrally located in the series. Hence, it is the median of the data.
Consider the data 86, 79, 57, 59, 65, 25, 40, 33, 49, 53. Arranging them in the ascending order, we get 25, 33, 40, 49, 53, 57, 59, 65, 79, 86. Since there are even numbers of observations, the data 53 and 57 centrally located in the series. Hence, 53+57/2=110/2=55 as the middle most value for the series. This is the median of the given data.
Median and Average-average
In general mean (A.M) or average of n observations x1, x2, …, xn is defined to be the number x such that the sum of the deviations of the observations from x is 0. That is, the arithmetic mean x of n observations x1, x2, …, xn is given by the equation. Please express your views of this topic Solving math problems by commenting on blog.
(x1 - x) +(x2 - x) + ... +(xn - x) = 0
Hence `barx` = x1+x2+x3+…….xn / n
Formula:
Mean or average= sum of elements / total number of elements
Example: To find the mean or average of 4, 5, 6
Step 1: Find the sum of numbers
4+5+6= 15
Step 2: Calculate the total value. Therefore 3 values
Step 3: Find the average 15/3=5
