Measurement Word Problems

Measurement is the process of assigning a number to a physical property. Measurement includes length, size of an angle, area, volume, mass, time, etc. In word problems we can write any mathematical expression into words. Usually word problems are substituting English terms for algebra symbols and equation.  So it is easy to understand and solve the any difficult problems easily.Is this topic Measurement Bias hard for you? Measurement Word Problems – Examples

Example 1: A rectangle has a perimeter of 240 meters and its length is 4 times its width. Find the dimensions W and L, and the area of the rectangle.

Solution:

Formula of the perimeter of a rectangle is 2L + 2W = 240

Length L is 3 times its width W => L = 4W

Substitute L in the equation 2L + 2W = 240 by 4W.

2(4W) + 2W = 240

10W = 240

Solve for W.

W = 24 meters

Put W = 24 into any of the equation to get.

L = 96 W = 24 meters

Formula for area of the rectangle is L * W.

Area = L W = 96 * 24 = 2304 meters2

Example 2: Find the volume of a sphere of radius 8.1 m.

Solution:

V = 4/3 pr3

= 4/3 p × 8.13

= 4/3 × p × 531.441

= 2224.97

So, the volume is 2224.97 m3.

Example 3: Find the volume of a cylinder with radius 5 cm and height 10 cm.

Solution:

V = pr2h

= 3.14 × 52 × 10

= 785

So, the volume of the cylinder is 785 cm3.

Example 4: Find the total surface area of a cylinder of radius 14 cm and height 5 cm.

Solution:

TSA = 2pr (r + h)

= 2 × 3.142 × 14(14+5)

= 2 × 3.142 × 14 × 19

= 1671.544

So, the total surface area is 1671.544 cm2.
